Most of the One Person Actions are things you can do yourself regardless of what policies or targets the government adopts. The government's target for reducing carbon emissions are not nearly enough to achieve a safe climate. However, individual citizens can voluntarily choose to reduce their own emissions by 50%, 80%, or even 100%. By acting together we can reduce Australia's emissions by much more than the government's target!
Even so, there are some things one person can't do, like commissioning major renewable energy and public transport projects, kick-starting an Australian electric car industry, and ensuring that carbon sinks, like old-growth forests, are protected. What we can do though, is make sure our politicians know what they need to do if they want us to elect them.
Industry and big business might have lobbying expertise and the money for advertising campaigns intended to sway public opinion, but at election time their vote is worth no more than ours. If enough of us tell our MPs what WE think is important, and if we tell them often enough...
Let's try it and see! By acting together, maybe we can also bring about those big changes that will help safe-guard our climate.
